”Richer and more equal: A history of Wealth in the west”

Daniel Waldenström, Professor of Economics at the Research Institute of Industrial
Economics (IFN) in Stockholm, Sweden. At the IFN he directs the Taxation and Society
research program. In his book, Richer and More Equal: A New History of Wealth in the
West (Polity, 2024), Waldenström shows that what stands out since the late 1800s is a
massive rise in the size of the middle class and its share of society’s total wealth.
Unfettered capitalism, it seems, doesn’t have to lead to boundless inequality. The key to
progress was political and institutional change that enabled citizens to become
educated, better paid, and to amass wealth through housing and pension savings, and
Waldenström argues that it is key to pursue tax and social policies that raise the wealth
of people in the bottom and middle rather than cutting wealth of entrepreneurs at the

top.

Daniel Waldenström, professor i ekonomi vid Institutet för Näringslivsforskning (IFN) i Stockholm, Sverige. På IFN leder han forskningsprogrammet Beskattning och Samhälle. I sin bok, ”Richer and more equal”: En Ny Historia om Rikedom i Väst (Polity, 2024), visar Waldenström att det som utmärker sig sedan slutet av 1800-talet är en massiv ökning av medelklassens storlek och dess andel av samhällets totala förmögenhet. Det verkar som att obehindrad kapitalism inte nödvändigtvis leder till obegränsad ojämlikhet. Nyckeln till framsteg var politiska och institutionella förändringar som gjorde det möjligt för medborgare att utbilda sig, få bättre betalt och samla förmögenhet genom bostäder och pensionssparande. Waldenström argumenterar för att det är avgörande att bedriva skatte- och socialpolitik som ökar förmögenheten för människor i botten och mitten, snarare än att minska entreprenörernas förmögenheter i toppen.
